The popularity of fentadope is mostly due to benefits it provides to the cartels, smugglers and dealers, and less because of the users desire for it.
Many people who end up using it don’t even know what they are using and think they are using heroin
Because fentanyl and its analogs are so many times more potent than heroin by weight it has unique advantages to the smugglers. For example if one kilo of heroin can supply 1,000 doses and fentanyl/fentanyl analogs can be 10-1000 times stronger, that means one kilo of fentanyl can supply minimum 10,000 doses. This makes it much easier to smuggle and hide because it's smaller and also much more profitable because they can sell more doses for the same amount of work.
Another unique quality of fentanyl that dealers and suppliers are taking advantage of is that unlike heroin fentanyl can be completely synthetic, meaning it can be made from synthesized chemicals and does not require opium.
Heroin production requires opium which is a crop. Growing opium takes time and money and the amount of heroin you can make depends on your opinion supply. Bad weather or crops being destroyed by law enforcement can impede production.
Fentanyl needs no opium and can be produced in labs making it cheaper and easier to produce.
These advantages combined has led to the massive reduction in heroin and the rise in popularity of fentadope.
In the beginning heroin was laced with fentanyl to increase its potency and stretch the supply. But over time the amount off heroin was reduced until no heroin was added at all and the fentadope is completely fentanyl/analogs and cut.
As the potency grew the users became addicted to the increased strength of the Fentanyl. Now most fentadope users with a tolerance would require significantly larger doses of heroin to avoid withdrawals and get high, and many began to prefer the fentadope because it’s stronger.
